My name's Xavier, or Xavi, and my pronouns are they/them/he/him. I'm an Afro-Caribbean, transmasc enby, transdisciplinary artist and activist from Puerto Rico. I form part of several collectives here on the island: EntrePutxs, Huerto Vida, Gesta Amatista, and La Otra Laboratoria.
A brief summary of each:
EntrePutxs is a mutual aid network for sex workers on the island.
Huerto Vida prioritizes the wellness of caretakers and children.
Gesta Amatista is a disability justice-centered subproject of La Sombrilla Cuir.
La Otra Laboratoria is an experimental performance group comprised of trans artists and activists.
All of these projects provide direct community outreach through workshops, micro grants, wellness events, and social events, among other activities.
I'm taking a break from hex work to really focus on my transition, so I've been working behind the scenes and my biggest project of the year is a Cabaret I'm producing that will be entirely comprised of hex workers and sluts. Kink, sexuality, and sensuality can be very healing, it's often the muse to our artistry. Hex workers can do it all, while working in the oldest profession. When you get down to it, hex workers are artists, social media managers, editors, creative directors, photographers, unwilling therapists (iykyk), we really do it all, so why are our living conditions still so miserable? I've created an art residency for hex workers, where for the next 5-6 months we will be workshopping through writing and movement to narrate our story, through this exquisite cabaret. We will be documenting the entire process, to show the world that we're here. I'm very excited for it, and I hope you are, too.
